WAR MEDALS:
The first war medal is said to have been awarded by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC.
War medals have definitely been around since the time of the Roman Empire when metal discs imprinted with the head of the emperor were awarded in recognition of military campaigns and other services during war.
Since the late 18th century however the practise of awarding medals to members of the armed services as a means of recognition has become increasingly widespread.
Earlier war medals include the 'Legion d'honneur' introduced by Napoleon in 1802, the 'Army Gold Medal' by the British army in 1810 and the Prussian 'Iron Cross' of 1813.
The term 'war medal' may relate to a standard circular medallion or other configurations such as stars, crosses etc....
